Have you ever had a task in front of you that just made your eyes bug out?
I remember about 6 years ago, around November of 2012 , I decided to make my presence online. It seemed like the IDEAL place to make money without having to try to pitch people. I was still coming into my own as far as interaction with people was concerned. So, this was a huge obstacle for me.
However, I am not going to dive into those details and lessons in this post..
Instead, lets fast forward a few years to when I finally started to understand the details of the online world. And man was it like a wave from the ocean smashed into me. I can remember the overwhelm I felt from the details involved. I can still feel the frustration from processing all of the different information that was presented to me.
Do ecomerce
Do email marketing
Do affiliate marketing
This isn’t even a going into the details of how each one works. Nor is this a complete list. But, I was completely confused. I could not even digest the information presented to me.
I took a break from this research for about 2 months. I remember I was in my room at night. My white laptop was sitting on a wooden tray table at the foot of my bed. I made a kind of whimsical decision to look into the online marketing again. I noticed that I was able to choke down the information a lot easier. I couldn’t help wondering what was different. I took a little self inventory and found two things.
- I wasn’t blindsided by information, because I had an idea of what to expect.
- It was a lot easier to concentrate.
So what changed?
I will get to that. For now remember the word STOP.
It was awesome to be able to take in all this information, but there was still a problem. Even though I was able to process it, I felt there was such a variety of information I did not know where to start. Who’s advice should I follow?
I felt like I was missing some steps.
I would get information like drive traffic to this one web page and make money?
I’d watch the presentation and it would be all about getting people to a website, collecting their email, and then presenting them with offers. I had soooo many questions and concerns.
I hate to be sold all the time, why would I email someone offer after offer?
How do I drive traffic to a website?
Where the heck do I even get these offers?
Then I had an epiphany. I am trying to solve problems I don’t have yet. And I realized I needed to figure out only one thing at this point to know where to start. It will make sense.
In the meantime remember the word LOOK.
So, by this time I had cleared the fog. I had an idea of what to do and where to start. All I had to do was start. But things came up. I had to go to travel for work. I wanted to go hang with the fellas. The parents needed help with something. I was just being plain lazy. Oops did I say that. We all need R&R right.
It wasn’t until I made a commitment that I actually got started. Can you guess what word I am going to tell you to remember?
Did you guess COMMIT? You got it then.
So lets put it all together. I needed to be able to do three things before I could take action.
STOP the noise in my head.
What do I mean? There was a lot of background thoughts going through my head when I first tried digesting the information about making money online. Guess what else? They were stating the obvious and serving only as a distraction. Yes the information was a lot. Yes I was confused. These thoughts were only stealing processing power. So I simply accepted the reality that I would need to put some time in, and it may take a few whacks. And poof the voices were gone.
LOOK for the fundamental information.
As much as I plan for work, I can’t recall a detail stopping me from getting started. Secondly, I can’t remember working on anything where all the details were presented to me up front. So there is no use worrying about gathering all the details before getting started. You do need the fundamentals though. The foundation upon which the details rest. The epiphany I had above was this. They sat the process of online marketing right in front of my face. The flat out told me the fundamental information.
- You need to make a website to collect emails.
- Get it in front of people.
- And present them with offers.
You may even have seen one of my websites and subscribed to my list already.
I did run into my questions above eventually. But I had a starting point now. Make a website. Of course, there was a learning curve. But I had clarity on what to do now.
COMMIT time to getting started.
There is not much I can say about this. Set a deadline to get something done. Schedule time to do it. Treat that scheduled time like you scheduled time to meet your favorite actor or singer or whoever. There are other benefits to sticking to this commitment, but I will address them in the future.
For now COMMIT time, and keep your date with yourself.
